I read a blog post recently that suggested we writers should all market ourselves as Business Building Rock Stars because we have a great command of the English language. The whole idea struck me as dishonest.
The truth of the matter is that it takes much more than good grammar and a strong vocabulary to help businesses turn a profit in a tough environment.
I’m a Rock Star because I play air guitar and I own an outlandish dress. I see the brilliance of my clients when they can’t see it themselves and I can express that brilliance in a way that matches an existing need in the marketplace.
I started writing professionally 30 years ago, I speak five languages, I’m a Master Practitioner of NLP, I have a Master’s Degree in English, I know the human heart inside out and upside down and I can talk about pain and longing with respect and comfort. I have two traditionally published books to my name and I do outrageous things like learn to fly, spend time with Buddhist monks, turn a cancer scare into a loving experience and swim with dolphins.
I’m a conventional person who hates rules, enjoys freedom, requires stability and trusts in the Universe. I safely facilitate people to a bigger vision for themselves in the world and I know every word to the songs “Amazing” and ”Dream On” by Aerosmith.
Oh, and, yes, I write copy.
